Unveiling the Enchanting Charms of Pula: Exploring Istria's Captivating Coastal Town

Discovering the Charms of Pula, Croatia
Pula, located on the Istrian peninsula in Croatia, is a captivating seaside town that offers a fascinating blend of history, natural beauty, and delicious cuisine. Whether you're a history buff, beach lover, or simply looking for a unique destination to explore, Pula has something for everyone. Let's take a closer look at some of the highlights of this enchanting city.
Ancient Roman Ruins
One of the main attractions in Pula is the Roman Amphitheater, also known as Pula Arena. Built during the reign of Emperor Vespasian, this well-preserved amphitheater is the only one remaining with all four side towers and three stories intact. Visitors can explore the amphitheater independently, admiring its grandeur and learning about its history. During the summer months, the amphitheater also hosts events such as concerts, movie screenings, and reenactments of Ancient Rome games.
Exploring the City
Take a leisurely stroll along the marina, where you'll find various boat tours to neighboring islands and national parks. Although we decided not to take a tour on our visit, the marina offers a picturesque setting for a walk. Pula Cathedral, also known as Katedrala uznesenja Blažene Djevice Marije, is another prominent landmark worth visiting, although it was closed during our visit.

Culinary Delights
When it comes to food, Pula offers a surprising treat – delicious pizza. With its proximity to Italy, the culinary influence is evident in the popularity of pizza in the city. Jupiter Pizzeria, renowned as the top pizza place in Pula, is a must-visit. We indulged in mouthwatering pizzas, including a local one and a seafood option, accompanied by a glass of red wine. The flavors and quality were outstanding, making this a memorable dining experience.
Views from Above
To appreciate the breathtaking views of Pula, a visit to Pula Castle, also known as Kaštel, is a must. Located on a hill in the city center, the castle was built by the Venetians in the 17th century. Apart from visiting the museum exhibits inside, the main draw of the castle is the panoramic views it offers of Pula, including the amphitheater, bell tower, and the picturesque waterfront.
A Glimpse into the Past
History enthusiasts will appreciate a visit to the Temple of Augustus (Augustov hram). This ancient temple, once a Christian church and a grain storehouse, now houses a small museum. While the interior may be small, the temple's exterior is a sight to behold. While in the area, be sure to stroll through the city's forum, a central square that was the social hub during Roman times.

If you have time, venture off the beaten path to discover the Roman Mosaic. Located a short walk from the forum, this well-preserved ancient floor depicts the Punishment of Dirce, a scene from Greek mythology. Although small, the mosaic is an intriguing hidden gem worth exploring.
A Charming and Relaxing Atmosphere
Finally, take the time to soak up the charm of Pula by wandering the city streets, admiring the architecture, and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere. With its proximity to the beach, Pula offers the perfect blend of history and natural beauty. While we didn't swim during our visit due to the cooler weather, the crystal-clear waters and stunning beaches are a major draw during the summer months.
Whether you're intrigued by ancient ruins, crave delicious cuisine, or simply want to soak up the unique ambiance of a coastal town, Pula is a destination that should not be missed. With its rich history, picturesque views, and mouthwatering food, Pula is sure to captivate any traveler.
